Against treatment interruption, surveillance that knows who missed care: MediRec brings the municipal network’s tuberculosis experience to SES-RJ

Invited to SES-RJ’s Conversation Circle on treatment adherence and combating interruption, MediRec shared the Tuberculosis Surveillance module, in operation in Rio’s municipal network since 2025.

Rio de Janeiro — Tuberculosis requires long treatment, and it is over this extended period that adherence can be lost. A patient changes clinics, a test result does not return, a notification is not sent—and the thread of follow-up breaks. Preventing treatment interruption begins with not losing sight of those who stopped.

This was the subject brought to the table on August 6, 2026, when MediRec participated in the Conversation Circle “Initiatives for treatment adherence and combating interruption,” promoted by the Rio de Janeiro State Health Department (SES-RJ) at its auditorium in Rio Comprido. From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the meeting brought together health professionals, public managers, civil society representatives, and strategic partners.

Invited to share its experience, MediRec presented not a promise, but an operational solution—built jointly with the Communicable Diseases Coordination. The Tuberculosis Surveillance module was presented as a collaborative work in progress: it integrates the systems the network already uses and supports continuity of care for as many professionals as possible. MediRec was represented by Luana Moussallem and Tarek Nabaa.

One case, one owner

In the module, every tuberculosis case has an explicit owner, with clearly defined roles for community health agents, technical teams, and management. Laboratory results arrive with traceable origins; indicators are read by cohort, following groups of patients over time rather than isolated numbers; and submissions to SINAN follow a controlled flow from registration to confirmation. The result is surveillance that knows who is in treatment, who missed care, and who needs attention now.

Instead of searching for a lost case after interruption has already occurred, the system alerts the team beforehand: missed visits, delayed tests, and pending returns become visible while there is still time to act. Adherence no longer depends on each professional’s memory and becomes a visible, assigned responsibility.

Part of a larger network

The module does not operate in isolation. It rests on the same foundation MediRec provides to the municipal network: a single interface bringing together SISREG, SER, GAL, SISCAN, SINAN Rio, SINAN Online, eSUS, and other systems, so data is entered once and context is not lost between windows. For tuberculosis, notification, testing, and clinical follow-up become one patient story.

Human decisions and protected data

MediRec’s artificial intelligence suggests priorities and checks criteria and documents, but qualification remains the professional’s responsibility—the clinical decision remains human. Because it handles health data, MediRec operates as a data processor under the network’s governance, has no patient-facing interface, processes data only within the project, and ensures its return or deletion within 30 days after the contract ends.
